Teaching and Counseling in the Public School System is fast becoming an impossible job. I have worked in the state system for 31 years and some astonishing changes have happened. In the last decade good teachers (the kind you remember) are getting out as fast as they can financially afford. The new kind of teacher is more technically trained than ever in the history of teaching. However many new teachers have little or no skill in nurturing the social/emotional wellbeing of their students. Some even think it is not their job. There are other real reasons why the schools are failing our children. For example, the new methods of evaluating teacher performance are so exhaustive; that teacher prep time and mental health is neglected. Students in our over-crowded classrooms are becoming more: needy, abused, drug effected, poor and homeless. This booklet will not answer all these problems. This book will try to instruct teachers in the art of nurturing the young mind emotionally and handling the difficult issue of child abuse. If you able to bridge the gap between you and them, despite all the societal barriers; students may gain the tools they need to be productive and happy. Is not this the real goal of schools?
