Shel Silverstein nació en 1930. Creció en Chicago y creó sus primeros dibujos para los lectores adultos del periódico Stars and Stripes cuando era soldado en Japón y Corea en los años cincuenta. También aprendió a tocar la guitarra y a escribir canciones, entre ellas A Boy Named Sue para Johnny Cash y The Cover of the Rolling Stone, cantada por Dr. Hook. Interpretó sus propias canciones en varios álbumes y escribió otras para amigos, incluida la última, en 1998, Old Dogs, un conjunto de dos volúmenes con las estrellas del country Waylon Jennings, Mel Tillis, Bobby Bare y Jerry Reed. En 1984, Silverstein ganó un premio Grammy al mejor álbum infantil por Where the Sidewalk Ends, “Recitado, cantado y gritado” por el autor.
