Polly Milton, an old-fashioned girl, visits her wealthy friend Fanny Shaw in the city and is overwhelmed by the fashionable urban life they live. But Polly is also left out because of her "countrified" manners and outdated clothes. Fanny's friends reject Polly because of her "different" behavior and simple clothing. Fanny herself can't help considering Polly "unusual" sometimes. However, Polly's warmth, support and kindness eventually win the Shaws' hearts, and her old-fashioned ways teach them a lesson. Six years later, Polly comes back to the city to become a music. Polly learns that the prosperous Shaws are really on the brink of bankruptcy. She guides them to the realization that a wholesome family life is much more important than money or fashion. With the comfort of the ever-helpful Polly, the Shaws change for the better and discover a happier life. After being rejected by his fiancée, Trix, Tom procures a job out West, with Polly's brother Ned, seeking to help his family and compensate for all the money he has wasted in frivolous expenditures. Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) nació en Germantown, Pensilvania, y tras pasar una temporada en Boston, murió en Concord, Massachusetts.

La energía y el espíritu independiente que ya tenía en su infancia la acompañaron a lo largo de toda su vida y la llevaron a aceptar distintos empleos para ayudar económicamente a su familia. En 1854 publicó su primer libro, Flower Fables, al que siguieron más de treinta novelas y colecciones de relatos. Pero su nombre iría siempre unido al de Mujercitas, una novela que escribió entre mayo y julio de 1868 por encargo de sus editores.
