On a visit to her sister Jane's house, Mary Hampton discovers that Jane and Mrs. Hoffman have devised a plan to see her gainfully employed. They talk her into applying at the Broadwell House in Denver City for a nanny position. Widower Brandon Carlyle, who is in town on business, requires a caretaker for his infant daughter, Rosalind, and upon meeting Mary, he hires her.
