Literary fiction, for all ages. Oren Walker is a bright, but shy, Canadian teenager who faces a lot of challenges. His twin brother Evan gives him lots of trouble. He doesn't know how to talk to girls, and he feels lonely. His Danish-born mother is homesick for her country and struggles with depression. His indigenous father is emotionally distant, always favouring Evan over him. One day, Oren encounters a mysterious being in the woods named Rayne, who does not seem quite human. Rayne becomes a secret mentor. He gives Oren lessons in philosophy, helping him to think more clearly. Oren slowly begins to understand how to cope with his problems. But soon, winter comes ... and Rayne disappears. Oren must now face his challenges alone. His mother goes back to Denmark. Everything at home gets much worse. One day, he gets fed up and he runs away from home, leading to a journey of self-discovery. He learns of his surprising true origins, and slowly gets to know somebody who will become very important to him. Through all of his experiences, Oren matures and grows into a mature young man, who will pass along all of the lessons that he learned from Rayne.
