Entre los numerosos reconocimientos que ha recibido, se cuentan la beca «Genius» MacArthur, el American Book Award, el Folio Prize, el International Dublin Literary Award y el Premio Mondello. Es profesora en Bard College y en la Universidad de Harvard. Vive en Nueva York.
