Thirteen-year-old Violet is a pro at being the "new girl," but this year she's staying put. Desperate for quiet, Violet breaks a promise to her father and sneaks in after midnight, only to encounter a ghostly librarian.
At first, Violet keeps the encounter secret, but she soon notices her classmates-and even the principal-acting like hollowed-out versions of themselves. Gracie, a popular volleyball player, has noticed too, and together they sneak back into the library, discovering a hidden room filled with jars of glowing orbs: the stolen "bad" memories of the town.
The ghost tempts Violet with the promise of a painless life, offering to erase the grief she still carries over her mother's death. Violet struggles with the decision, torn between comfort and the painful memories that make her human. But when the town begins to unravel, Violet realizes that protecting her friends-and reclaiming the stolen memories-is more important than avoiding her own pain.
