American Gypsy Dix Arcos believes he's found a safe haven in a remote Florida fishing village, listening to Mozart, sailing his beloved boat Mariposa--and occasionally running bales of high-grade Mexican marijuana from the Gulf to New York City. It's nearly an ideal life, until two bodies turn up in a nearby swamp and Dix suspects his volatile partner is the killer. His pursuit of evidence puts him at risk of his own life, especially when his ruthless boss, "the Major," orders him to commit a crime he just can't bring himself to execute. Set in 1964-5 and inspired by true events, the story takes you to mid-Florida where a mysterious conglomerate is scouting vast areas of swampland and ranches, where Dix is forced into a bizarre kidnapping plot. To Key West and a new romance, to a mountaintop estate near Tampico, then north to Brooklyn NY and finally, a deserted pier on the midnight waters of Long Island's Jamaica Bay over which screaming jets almost drown the sound of gunfire.
