The writer of Exodus tells us that when Moses went up the mountain to meet with God, the people stayed below, and when Moses returned, his face shone so brightly that the people could not bear to look at him. The Gospels tell us that Jesus led his three disciples up the mountain where his face shone like the sun and when they heard the voice of God they fell to the ground overcome with fear. Most of us, like the Israelites in the wilderness and the disciples on the mountain, are not able to gaze directly at the sacred. The following offerings of words are not first accounts of face to face meetings with the holy but are rather glimpses out of the corner of the eye, whispers of the transcendent. To be brushed by the sacred is to feel the hint of wings and the rustling breeze in a stand of pines. I have come to suspect that the sacred is most mercifully revealed in the ordinary and offers us enough raw presence to startle the soul and race any heart. These various pieces rise out of the everyday and are intended to be as accessible as a child's drawing or a lover's kiss. Accept them in the spirit they are offered and discover perhaps that the sacred is closer than you imagined.
