On Friday, October 28th, near the Tri-State Corner where Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee meet, Jacob, hot from a hard day's work on his farm, entered his house for a drink and to stand in front of a fan to cool down. No such luck. The power was out.

His wife, Anna, was at work at Sullivan Realty in Chattanooga, Tennessee, only about 8 miles away. When she didn't come home as expected, he went to his truck to go check on her. Nothing. No phones, no TV, no radio. In the middle of nowhere.

When his long-time friend Violet and her two boys from Alabama rode up to his place on horseback (Alabama Fall 1, The Long Ride Home) and told him a story about this being an EMP and not your average local power outage, Jacob's hopes of Anna driving home vanished.
