A small number of Hart's footnotes have been omitted, and several notes have been drawn from Edward Maitland's original first edition where they offered clarifying or historical detail not retained in the later edition. The footnotes presented here should therefore be understood as a considered composite of both editions, rather than a strict reproduction of either. The Appendix has been similarly adapted for this edition. In the source editions, its annotations were keyed to the pagination of that particular printing - references which no longer correspond to any later typesetting. Rather than reconstruct these correspondences, the Appendix is presented here as astandalone sequence of Notes, numbered consecutively for ease of reference. They are not keyed to specific passages in the main text, and are offered instead as a body of supplementary reflection in their own right.
