This book presents a comprehensive study of Composite Materials - Unit II, covering fiber-reinforced, laminated, particulate/dispersed, metal-matrix and polymer-matrix composites. It begins with the fundamentals of composite materials, explaining the roles of the matrix, reinforcement and fiber-matrix interface, followed by classification, fiber architectures and design philosophy. Micromechanics is developed through the rule of mixtures, transverse properties, Halpin-Tsai relations, load transfer and critical fiber length, with relevant assumptions, derivations and equations. Laminated composites are treated using orthotropic lamina theory, stiffness transformation and Classical Lamination Theory, including the derivation and significance of the A, B and D matrices, laminate coupling and thermal stresses. The book then discusses manufacturing, defects and quality assurance.
