Not so, this brilliant scholar says. For just as each era has new ways of understanding, so, too, must the Catholic Church always change in its understanding of faith and morals. Myth #2: Catholics have to do whatever the Pope says. To the contrary, according to Newman's famous quip on after-dinner toasts, the ultimate obligation of Catholics is to conscience, not the Pope. Myth #3: It's the bishops who teach, the laity who follows. Newman turns this notion upside down: The laity, he says, are the source and final seal of the church's teaching; thus the bishops must listen to them. John Henry Newman nació el 21 de febrero de 1801 en Londres y falleció el 11 de agosto de 1890 en Birmingham, Inglaterra. Educado en el Trinity College de Oxford, se convirtió en tutor del Oriel College y vicario de la iglesia universitaria de la ciudad. Durante esos años emergió como figura clave del llamado “Oxford Movement”, una corriente anglicana que buscaba revalorizar la herencia católica de la Iglesia de Inglaterra.

En 1845 Newman, tras una reflexión profunda sobre la continuidad histórica del cristianismo, se convirtió al catolicismo. A partir de ese momento se dedicó al sacerdocio católico, fundó la comunidad del Oratorio en Inglaterra y, en 1879, fue elevado al rango de cardenal por el papa León XIII. A lo largo de su vida escribió prolíficamente —ensayos, sermones, poemas—, abordando temas de fe, conciencia, educación y la relación entre razón y revelación.

En su obra destacan Apologia Pro Vita Sua, una defensa autobiográfica de su fe; y The Idea of a University, un tratado sobre el papel de la educación superior. Newman defendió la importancia de la conciencia personal, la formación integral de la persona y la búsqueda de la verdad como vocación. Su legado trasciende lo estrictamente religioso: también se le reconoce como un pensador de la cultura y la educación moderna.
