The object of the present work is criminalistics, a science through which expertise is performed. The question that is asked by this object is what are its foundations and historical context, its emergence was given by knowledge or practical needs? Therefore, as a theoretical reference, bibliographic surveys have been carried out on the content and the appropriate observations and knowledge have been added to the research. The bibliographical study gave a subsidy to deepen the knowledge in its historical context, evolution, concept of criminalistics, expert work and also about the application in the contemporaneity. Concepts of Garrido RG and Giovanelli A (2009), Braz JAC (2013) and Lino D and Mastunaga LH (2018), among others, were discussed. Finally, the technical and conceptual analysis of criminalistics is of utmost importance, often confused with criminology, although very similar to a different work assignment. Finally, the importance of knowledge about criminalistics and its factors can help in the operational work of police and investigative officers.
