I wrote this manuscript by hand whilst travelling to the heart of the Australian Outback, Uluru or Ayers Rock. Writing day and night whilst on a dusty bus - there weren't any flights from Brisbane to Alice Springs or the magnificent Katherine Gorge back in 1989 - I met local characters in pubs, on sheep stations and passing through mining towns on my way to Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory.I completed the lyrical drama CRUX in 1990 and despite one obvious meaning of the title being "Crux Australis", this operatic play is set in an Antipodean colony that could represent what was once the "colonial project" anywhere in the world.The final act was completed in 2019 when I was on sabbatical on the French Riviera.
