Want to know what it's really like to be pregnant? Of course not, because who wants to think about such a freakish thing as "I'm growing a human." Oh, unless you are growing a human. If that's the case, congratulations! I'm sure by now formerly-pregnant friends or friends of friends or anyone who can spell the word friend have given you myriad books on the subject claiming they have the antidote to all of your fears and confusion. Read this one, it's the best! Meanwhile, the stack grows on your nightstand as you begin to realize these books are more-or-less the same: Either written by experts, i.e., baby nurses from Sweden, or self-declared "non-experts," real moms promising to dish the dirt and tell you what it's really like. That, and everyone wants to unload their old baby crap on you. Sure, some books are helpful. The "funny ones" are good for a quick read when you feel like you should be doing something but are tired and just want to watch Bravo. The "serious ones" about things like breastfeeding get pushed to the bottom of the pile until the third trimester, nature's allotted time for procrastination. And then there is my book. . . When I found out I was pregnant after two years of fertility treatments, I handled my overwhelming emotions the only way I knew how: I am a writer (former entertainment editor of Seventeen magazine), so I began writing to my unborn children.
