Decline and Fall is based, in part, on Waugh's schooldays at Lancing College, undergraduate years at Hertford College, Oxford, and his experience as a teacher at Arnold House in north Wales.Modest and unassuming theology student Paul Pennyfeather falls victim to the drunken antics of the Bollinger Club and is subsequently expelled from Oxford for running through the grounds of Scone College without his trousers. His colleagues are an assortment of misfits, including Prendy and captain Grimes, who is always in the soup or just plain drunk. Having thereby defaulted on the conditions of his inheritance, he is forced to take a job teaching at an obscure private school in Wales called Llanabba, run by Dr Fagan.Attracted to the mother of one of his pupils, a wealthy widow called the Honourable Margot Beste-Chetwynde, he is delighted to be hired by her as tutor to her son during the vacation. Living in her country mansion, he becomes aware of her lovers and drug use but fails to realise that her business is running a chain of high-class brothels in Latin America.Taking its title from Edward Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Evelyn Waugh's first, funniest novel immediately caught the ear of the public with his account of an ingénu abroad in the decadent confusion of 1920s high society.

Evelyn Waugh (1903–1966) fue un novelista británico reconocido por su aguda sátira social y su prosa elegante. Educado en Lancing College y Hertford College, Oxford, trabajó brevemente como profesor antes de dedicarse por completo a la escritura. Sus experiencias en la Segunda Guerra Mundial influyeron notablemente en su obra, especialmente en la trilogía Espada de honor (1952–1961).

Entre sus obras más destacadas se encuentran Decadencia y caída (1928), Un puñado de polvo (1934), ¡Noticia bomba! (1938) y Retorno a Brideshead (1945), esta última considerada una de sus novelas más influyentes. También escribió biografías, libros de viajes y relatos cortos, consolidándose como una figura central en la literatura inglesa del siglo XX.
