Seven-year-old Kai is a gentle, imaginative boy trying to survive in a home dominated by his stepmother Terri, a bodybuilder whose escalating steroid use fuels violent mood swings, paranoia, and abuse. On the last day of school, June 4, 2010, Kai proudly sets up his science fair project, but the tadpoles he needs are still at home. Terri offers to drive back for them, but instead takes him deep into the woods to a secluded waterfall. There, in a calculated act, she causes his fatal fall, then buries evidence of what happened and returns home to maintain the fiction that Kai went missing.

What follows is the unraveling of the cover-up: Kai’s father Kaine is nearly killed in a suspicious car "accident," detectives uncover steroid use and inconsistencies in Terri’s story, and the people who loved Kai - his mother Desiree, his father, and his devoted Uncle Jimmi are consumed by grief, guilt, and a growing certainty that Terri is responsible. The community holds a vigil, suspicion tightens around Terri, and those left behind grapple with what they missed and vow never to let a child’s suffering go unnoticed again.

Interwoven throughout are reflective passages on the psychological effects of anabolic steroid abuse and on institutional failures school, family, and community -to see and protect a child in danger. The book closes with a meditation on memory and accountability, framed around Kai’s empty desk as a lasting symbol of loss and unmet responsibility.
