Mario Benedetti nació en Paso de los Toros, Uruguay en 1920. Se educó en un colegio alemán y se ganó la vida como taquígrafo, cajero, vendedor, contable, funcionario público, traductor y periodista, profesión que ejerció durante cuatro décadas en el semanario Marcha, hasta que fue clausurado por la dictadura. Esa misma dictadura le forzó a exiliarse en 1973, fecha a partir de la cual residió sucesivamente en Argentina, Perú, Cuba y España. Narrador, poeta, ensayista y dramaturgo, autor de más de setenta libros traducidos a dieciocho idiomas. De entre su obra literaria destacan las antologías poéticas Inventario e Inventario Dos, las novelas La tregua, Gracias por el fuego, Primavera con una esquina rota, los libros de cuentos Montevideanos, La muerte y otras sorpresas, Con y sin nostalgia y la novela en verso El cumpleaños de Juan Ángel.
