This first volume of a family saga begins with a little girl in rural Arkansas who will begin her journey of music by learning to play the piano. She is four-and-a-half years old when the story begins. Her adventures are sweet and sour as she moves into a world of great joy and misadventure. She has much to learn. Leaving her home and entering the big city of Chicago offers her a world she has never imagined, and a sorrow from which she fear she will never recover. It's her determination and pluck that makes her story compelling, just as other stories of growing up and coming to terms have always been told, often inspiring readers to have faith and get on with it, whatever it is. Thistle Brown's novels are character-driven, the reader able to enjoy - or not - the complications humans tend to create for themselves. This first volume will be followed by at least six others in which you'll find complications abounding, and from several families. Beginning in the early 20th Century, it continues until the early 21st Century. For the female protagonist, it's a coming-of-age story.
