Se graduó en Lengua Inglesa por la Universidad de Maine y trabajó como profesor antes de dedicarse por completo a la escritura tras el éxito de su primera novela, Carrie (1974). Desde entonces, ha publicado más de 60 novelas y cientos de relatos cortos, muchos bajo el seudónimo Richard Bachman, con títulos emblemáticos como El resplandor, IT, Misery, La torre oscura, Cementerio de animales y La milla verde, muchos de ellos adaptados exitosamente al cine y la televisión.
