Every child is different; and every child has problems at school. Gabrielle has had problems at school for as long as she can remember. Her adoptive parents are kind to her, and their money means she wants for nothing. However, most of the time, their money is all she sees. She often has dreams about her real mother, sees her vividly, and hears her whisper words of encouragement. Although she has never met this woman she sees, she knows this is her mother, watching over her. At her private school, she sticks out like a sore thumb. All her female classmates are blond haired and blue-eyed, contrasting her black hair and ebony eyes. She is small, quiet, and doesn't fit in. One day, a bully takes things too far, and she sees red. Her anger builds and before she knows it, a tree branch comes crashing down on her assailant. Locker doors slam on their own, things move to her hand, paranormal and supernatural occurrences take place every day, her mother's image smiling in the back of her mind. Expelled for violence, her mind reeling from the discovery of her powers, she is trying to think of how to hide it from her parents when she meets Garrett on the walk home. Garrett is an older boy at school, more popular and more extroverted, and she can't believe he is paying attention to her, with his trademark smile and signature limp that makes him even more adorable. Half way through the conversation, Garrett reveals that he knows all about her supernatural powers, and he is willing to help her. Skeptical and untrusting, she is only willing to take a step forward because of his warm smile. He reveals his limp is a byproduct of black magic gone wrong, the demons and devils he had to cope with; he wants to help her discover her true story, the horror of it all.
