Painting as a vision of the world The new monograph on Eberhard Havekost (1967–2019) presents the full spectrum of possibilities in painting. His work is characterised by a blend of realist, informal and colour-field paradigms: a search for a concept of painting fit for the present day, imbued with sensual intensity and profound reflection. Eberhard Havekost’s visual language uniquely combines representations of the visible world with the ‘user interfaces’ of today’s digital modernity. Published for the first posthumous retrospective, this survey brings together some 200 paintings and 60 works on paper from 1994 to 2019. Initially considered an exponent of ‘Dresden Pop’, Havekost rose from Berlin to become a star of the international art scene and spent the final nine years of his life as a professor at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
