After Independence in India, Universalisation of Elementary Education (UEE) was accepted as an important objective of the nation, and Free and Compulsory Education became the constitutional commitment of India. Under this perspective, an attempt has been made in this book to review the present Elementary Education Scenario in the state of West Bengal in India, which was once upon a time considered as the cultural and educational centre in South-East Asia.
