volumes dedicated to the exquisite patterns found in hand-drawn wallpaper designs.
These first recurrent designs redefine the boundaries of the domestic wall by pulling
the idealized heritage of Toile de Jouy and William Morris into the forest of the subconscious. Here, nature is not a tamed garden but a feral, overgrown landscape where
nature is surreal, a symbolic, dream-like landscape, and ominous at times. It is a dark
pastoral aesthetic, slightly gothic, where the repetition of the motif serves to deepen
the mystery rather than provide the safety of a traditional decorative pattern.
The visual language of the book is one of high contrast. Working exclusively with
hand-cut stencils, Viollet eliminates the safety of gray and his work vibrates with
intensity. The reader can feel the physical weight of time invested in every leaf and
shadow, transforming the wallpaper from a surface treatment into a permanent
narrative record of the artist’s discipline. Within the dense pattern, mirrored elements
coalesce into hidden animals and surreal forms, suggesting a space where the wall is
not merely a boundary but a silent observer, a whole room becoming a site of immersive surrealism.
