How did you come up with the idea for Florence the Data Scientist? Ryan Kelly: I am certainly not a data scientist! Which is really how this book came to be. I originally came up with the idea as a project for our company's annual hackathon. It's a multi-day event where we break up into teams to solve a problem and build something that encourages cross-functional collaboration and teamwork. I had only started a few weeks before and I was really struggling to effectively and concisely communicate what data science was. I thought if I couldn't explain it to my family and friends, how on earth would I explain it to my daughter? And how many actual data scientists have the same problem with their kids? What do they say on Career Day?So you wrote the story collaboratively initially? Ryan Kelly: Yes. There were over eighty ideas for projects and this book was one of a dozen selected internally for the hackathon. We ended up breaking off into a small group of nine and worked on the initial storyline and illustrations. Even though the project didn't win the hackathon (we came in third), people really wanted a finished copy to read to their kids. So we went for it! I found an illustrator and kept refining the manuscript with help from others and
here we are! Earlier this year, we hit print and now every employee of Domino has a copy to read to their kids.But you didn't want to stop there? Ryan Kelly: No way! Our mission as a company is to unlock the power of data science and this story is way too good to keep under wraps. We want to make sure kids everywhere know about it regardless of whether their parents work in the field or not.
