Formate (HCOO⁻) circulates in mammalian blood at 10–100 μM, and this book asks what it is doing there. It began with a model prediction: cells break down serine faster than they need its one-carbon units, and the surplus overflows as formate. Experiments confirmed it. Part I follows that evidence from cells and tumours into the blood, where formate becomes a currency between organs. Part II asks what it buys: purines, insulin, neural tube closure, the eye, exchange between mitochondria. Each answer is a new prediction, so the book ends as it began, with predictions to be tested by experiments.
