Viajó mucho en su niñez por la condición de oficial de la armada de su padre. Una enfermedad le acarreó el vivir en una silla de ruedas prácticamente toda su vida. Estudió Arte en la escuela de Bideford, y se dedicó a pintar miniaturas hasta que en 1950 comenzó a escribir.

Escribió novelas infantiles, de aventuras, biografías y fundamentalmente novelas de ficción histórica, caracterizadas por su escritura minuciosa y de gran calidad literaria, con mucha delicadeza y lirismo.
