English summary: Closely combined with theories of social, artificial or biological systems, functionalism is of central importance for many scientific disciplines in describing and explaining their special research topics. Although the term "function" is given different meanings, there is general agreement that functions are mechanisms for solving system problems. Despite the massive criticism social functionalism arouses - falsely founded on the principal of nomological causality of classical physics - functional explanations are indispensable for understanding the social world. According to Edwin Czerwick, the challenge is to create a framework of social functionalism as an empirical research program which, beside other things, is characterized by a combination of functional explanations with other causal, teleological, intentional and dispositional explanations. German description: Der Funktionalismus ist in enger Verbindung mit der Systemtheorie fur die Beschreibung und Erklarung realer Phanomene fur viele Wissenschaften von zentraler Bedeutung. Funktionen werden dabei im Allgemeinen als dauerhafte Einrichtungen zur Losung von Systemproblemen verstanden. Trotz massiver Kritik am Funktionalismus, die sich falschlich am nomologischen Kausalitatsprinzip der klassischen Physik orientiert, sind funktionale Erklarungen fur das Verstandnis der sozialen Welt unverzichtbar. Da man funktionalen Erklarungen nicht entkommen kann, ist es laut Edwin Czerwick unabdingbar, den sozialwissenschaftlichen Funktionalismus als empirisches Erklarungsprogramm weiterzuentwickeln, das sich durch eine Kombination von funktionalen Erklarungen mit unter anderem kausalen, intentionalen, teleologischen oder dispositionalen Erklarungen auszeichnet. Das Denken in Funktionen ist fur die Sozialwissenschaften auch deshalb konstitutiv, weil es auf die Losung von sozialen Problemen gerichtet ist.
