He soon discovers that not only was he betrayed, he is the last of his group alive. Determined to return home and uncover the truth behind the lie, he warily accepts the woman's offer to escort him. There begins a passionate love affair that takes them back across the North Sea and to a revelation that rocks Vigmund's world view.

Not only has his entire life been a lie, but the woman, this warrior of uncommon beauty, is not what she first seemed. Or is she? Their love affair spirals towards doom as they close in on Mercia, where Vigmund learns that some oaths were made for breaking.
