Reseña del libro "Georgetown Investigations. Shadows Beneath the Surface (en Inglés)"

Georgetown Investigations · Book One

Shadows Beneath the Surface
Georgetown, South Carolina · June 2026

When two fishermen pull Henry Griffin's body from the Black River on a June morning, the Georgetown County sheriff's office calls it what it looks like: a grieving widower, a man who couldn't carry the weight of his wife's death any longer, a river that doesn't give up its dead easily. Case closed. Apparent suicide.

Ruth Lambert, Henry's youngest daughter, knows her father better than that. He paid his farm insurance in April. He had a seed appointment in Kingstree two weeks out. He was not, she says with the particular tired precision of a woman who has been preparing this answer for three hours, a man who quit things.

She hires former Charlotte homicide detective Margaret Anne Miller - Maggie to anyone she's let get that close - to prove it.

Maggie has built a second life in Georgetown County - a two-story farmhouse on ten acres, an office on the bottom floor, and her daughter April McGee as her sharp-eyed associate, forensic science degree in hand and three-year-old son Hunter underfoot. What she's built is quiet and good, and she knows from long professional experience that quiet, good things have a way of getting complicated.

Complicated is what she gets. Henry Griffin didn't drown himself. His wife Loretta didn't die of her heart eight months before. And somewhere beneath the Spanish moss and the pluff mud and the slow brown current of the Black River, a scheme has been running long enough to believe it had gotten away with everything - a falsified county deed record, a medical examiner with an accommodating relationship to the truth, a cattleman with water rights on his mind and no particular conscience about how he acquired them.

Georgetown County is a place of extraordinary beauty and long memory and the particular Southern quality of knowing where every body is buried - sometimes literally. Maggie Miller is finding that out one thread at a time, with an overworked homicide detective watching from a cautious distance, a seventy-three-year-old mother who knows everyone's Thursday schedule, and the creeping certainty that the deeper she digs, the more the county's shadows are going to object to the light.
