In 1627, the Franciscan monk Frei Vicente do Salvador wrote a history of Brazil that extends from the arrival of the Portuguese in South America in 1500 to the present day. He reports on the discovery of the continent and the first contacts with the original inhabitants. He praises the country's wealth, but also describes the gradual settlement, the beginning exploitation of nature and the displacement of the indigenous population, which led to cruel conflicts. He tells of expeditions into the interior, pirate raids and wars against other European powers that also wanted to settle in Brazil. His historical work ends with the conquest of Salvador da Bahia by the Dutch and the Portuguese reconquest, which he witnessed as an eyewitness. Frei Vicente's History of Brazil, which is available in translation for the first time, is the most important source on the early colonial history of Brazil and offers direct and authentic access to the sometimes dramatic events in the young Portuguese colony. Numerous maps from that time complement the text and illustrate the gradual development of this vast country.
