As one of the co-founders and chief representative of the Religionsgeschichtliche Schule (school of the history of religions) he established highly innovative methodological approaches to the Old and the New Testament. Indeed, all of his major publications were milestones in research history. His commentary on Genesis and his various readings of the Psalms have become classics in 20th century protestant bible exegesis. His name remains inextricably linked with genre-historical interpretation of biblical texts.
