Highmoor Tales is a bit like a well-kept diary of the author's life. John McCartney grew up in Ireland, in Derry, and had both an urban and rural childhood, with fields and rivers never far away. Into adulthood, we read stories of his coming of age, falling in love, fatherhood and beautifully crafted anecdotes from his rich life up to the present day. It is at times amusing, at times serious and at times dramatic, as in the story, 'Awash'. It recalls events like they happened yesterday, some mere snippets of a day - be that about fishing or incidental happenings - and stories that serve to bring alive a different time, a time in some ways unrecognisable today but in other ways showing how little has changed. A couple of the stories are aimed at children.
