Steven Levitsky es un politólogo estadounidense nacido en 1968 en Ithaca, Nueva York. Es profesor de Gobierno y Estudios Latinoamericanos en la Universidad de Harvard y director del Centro David Rockefeller para Estudios Latinoamericanos. Su investigación se centra en la democracia comparada, los regímenes autoritarios y las instituciones políticas, con un enfoque especial en América Latina. Levitsky es conocido por su trabajo sobre regímenes autoritarios competitivos y por su análisis de las instituciones informales en la política.

Entre sus obras más destacadas se encuentra Cómo mueren las democracias (2018), coescrita con Daniel Ziblatt, que analiza cómo los líderes electos pueden socavar gradualmente las instituciones democráticas. Este libro fue reconocido con el NDR Kultur Sachbuchpreis en 2018 y el Goldsmith Book Prize en 2019.
