Reseña del libro "Kukuchi: Her Life and Times (en Inglés)"

"Kukuchi" is a feisty black woman (living with albinism) who navigates her way in a dysfunctional and oppressive environment in which skin colour determines profiles and prospects. Kukuchi's tenacity demonstrates the potential fighting spirit in us all. The novel is a work of considerable scope and imagination, by turns tense, shocking, entertaining and inspiring. The author writes with a personal sense of belonging, engagingly communicated to the audience through humor and sincerity. 'Donaldson Primary was resonant with angelic voices of its girls' choir, rehearsing O'Carolan's 'English Country Garden' "Kuchi, are you still friends with that crook of a girl called Bukeka?" 'African girls can't do javelin'. 'The Department dispatched an army of inspectors who fired both Mrs McLeod and her protégé'. "Where is my Elvis?" "Law is difficult. There is no time for 'little Mandelas', 'little Lillians' in the Law Faculty." 'According to their policy; they did not recognize 'non-white' beauty contests'. 'When Olifant and I held each other close, fresh fragrances from the flowering shrubs of Donaldson rushed back and teased me. Once again, I could feel Mendi's arms wrapped around my body, with unbridled eruptions of desire so overwhelming I let my defenses down'. 'She told her the police found her body in a shallow grave near a local stream under the branches of the willow tree'. 'In a remarkable feat of further originality, white sports bodies tried to convince the world that the South African government sports policy had undergone a major change'. Chuene said, "Bukeka was pretty and lovable, but she could never discover herself and understand how her beauty such as she had, her loveliness and pretty smile, had failed to get her anywhere and why Kukuchi had seemed to achieve everything." 'In the morning, while Kenny was taking a shower, Kukuchi dipped her hands into his belongings and came across a thin folder. On it were illustrations pointing to various targets for bombings in the Johannesburg central business district'. 'Tina found her final resting place in her own village of Bikita, among her loved ones and ancestors'. "I see your whites-only sports bodies are now at work pretending to be good citizens..." "When Sobukwe said Africans wanted their land back, they called him a communist. How could Sobukwe be a communist?" 'On reaching the top, Kukuchi sets her wandering eye on the Drakensberg and it feels as if she can easily touch the Devil's Tooth'. "This beautiful land you see on the far side of Moyeni and Maqabaqabeni was stolen from the Africans by white settlers..." "Did you kill your mother?""Yes." "...here I was talking to a potential client from a wealthy household who once had a low opinion of me." 'I knew that the matriarch and patriarch had been living apart for a long time, with rumors about divorce swirling around for even longer'. 'A warm feeling of delight swept over me. I watched Zenzi enter the voting booth, her enigmatic smile concealing her pain and secrets'. "My father's child, you know that the court is a friend of the crafty." "Let's go home and prepare to bury our Hlubi Princess with dignity..."
