In this newly revised and updated edition, Michel Chion offers up a situational analysis dealing all at once with acoustics, music, psychology of listening, and an assessment text. Expanding upon Pierre Schaeffer's work that allowed us to think about and describe sounds as we would objects, Chion presents the essentials of a new discipline, "acousmatic" listening -- listening without visual access to a sound's cause -- where sound is no longer simply the symbol of a lost harmony or a "black continent" of perception, but a cultural object to construct via listening techniques.
