The secondary character in the book is Bette's son Monte who is orphaned at 9 years old, he does not discover his roots until he is a grown man by finding a manuscript penned by his father. After a bizarre odyssey he finds out why his father disappeared and other mysteries of his families past. It is truly a riches to rags story.
