William Faulkner (1897-1962) fue un escritor estadounidense destacado por su contribución a la literatura modernista y el género gótico sureño. Es conocido por su innovador uso del monólogo interior, narraciones fragmentadas y exploración del sur de Estados Unidos. Entre sus obras más importantes se encuentran El sonido y la furia (1929), Mientras agonizo (1930), ¡Absalón, Absalón! (1936) y Luz de agosto (1932).

Su literatura, cargada de simbolismo y complejidad estructural, retrata la decadencia del sur estadounidense y sus conflictos raciales y sociales. En 1949, recibió el Premio Nobel de Literatura, consolidándose como una de las figuras más influyentes de la narrativa del siglo XX. También obtuvo dos premios Pulitzer por Una fábula (1954) y Los rateros (1962).
