Alfonso Reyes (1889-1959) was the leading Mexican writer of his time. He was revered by his great successor Octavio Paz, a writer who, like himself, was also an Ambassador. Enormously prolific, he was a master of the essay, that "most Latin-American of art forms" and an outstanding critic. He knew Hispanic and classical literature, and translated Homer, Sterne, Chesterton, Stevenson, Shaw, and Chekhov. In turn, Samuel Beckett translated some of his poems into English; some of his essays, too, can be read in English. Reyes saw writing as "the richest means of expressing human feeling". "Double redemption by the word: first through the concord of bloods; second through the shaping of the personality, in its relation to others as well as in its inner growth." His poetry was varied, always skilful and urbane, and was far outweighed by his huge output of prose. Alfonso Reyes Ochoa (Monterrey, 1889 – Ciudad de México, 1959) fue un destacado escritor, ensayista, poeta y diplomático mexicano, considerado una de las figuras más influyentes de la literatura hispanoamericana del siglo XX. Miembro fundador de El Colegio Nacional y creador de El Colegio de México, su obra abarca desde la crítica literaria hasta la filosofía y la poesía. Entre sus títulos más reconocidos se encuentran Visión de Anáhuac (1917), Ifigenia cruel (1924), El deslinde (1944), La experiencia literaria (1942), Cartilla moral (1952) y Memorias de cocina y bodega (1953). Su legado está reunido en las Obras completas, publicadas por el Fondo de Cultura Económica.

Reyes fue galardonado con el Premio Nacional de Literatura en 1945 y el Premio de Literatura Manuel Ávila Camacho en 1953. Además, recibió doctorados honoris causa de universidades como Harvard, Princeton y la Sorbona. Su estilo, erudito y accesible, lo convirtió en un puente entre la tradición clásica y la modernidad literaria. Su influencia perdura en la cultura mexicana y en el pensamiento hispanoamericano contemporáneo.
