Moll's mother is an inmate at Newgate Prison who receives a reprieve by appealing to her womb, invoking the custom of postponing execution for pregnant criminals. Her mother is then deported to America, and Moll Flanders (this, she emphasizes, is not her real name, which she never reveals) is raised until adolescence by a kind foster mother. After her mother's death, Betty (this is the name we find in this part of her life) is taken in by a wealthy family, where she is loved by both sons. The elder of the two convinces her to behave as if they were married in bed, but then refuses to marry her and persuades her to marry his younger brother, who, in love with her, had repeatedly proposed to her. After her husband's death, her children are taken away by her in-laws, and she begins to hone her skill of passing herself off as a wealthy widow in order to attract a man who will marry her and give her security...
