Though non-autobiographical, her descriptions of family, domestic and world events are at times amusing, shocking, and on others, downright horrific. The constant background theme for herself, husband and children throughout, is self-motivation towards achievement, engendered through previous harsh experience. From the place of her birth, she colourfully describes dwellings from pre WW2 right up to the 21st century, from the humble to the sheer luxurious.
