Escritora feminista británica, colabora con The Guardian entre otras publicaciones. Fundó la página web Everyday Sexism Project en abril de 2012. Su primer libro, Everyday Sexism, se publicó en 2014. Previamente trabajó como actriz y niñera, un periodo en el que experimentó el sexismo en las audiciones y descubrió que las niñas que cuidaba estaban demasiado preocupadas por su imagen. Durante una entrevista para The Daily Telegraph, en abril de 2014, Bates afirmó: «El feminismo significa para mí que todos deben ser tratados igual, independientemente de su sexo. Tenemos que dejar de juzgar a las mujeres por su apariencia». «Un hombre puede ser padre, médico, político o abogado, sin que su sexo sea motivo de comentario —dijo a Anna Klassen de The Daily Beast—; no se trata de hombres contra mujeres, sino de personas contra prejuicios».
