Oor Bit is a piece of waste land where kids go to play after school. It is here throughout their lives that cousins such as Mal and Calum and their pal Static( so called as he is never on the same wave length as anyone else) meet . Here games are enacted sometimes with tragic results . Calum devises ways of avoiding his Highland Dancing practice, and the school bully Basher Moodie.Oor Bit's gradual demise as boys miss football to be with their lassies.The greatest tragedy of all 'starting work.' Static as a grocery 'message boy' with disastrous results.Mal's dilemma by having to avoid his pal in order to meet his girl. Calum who tries to impress his snob of a girl by competing in a cross country race although (he could not run out of sight on a dark night) when thanks to his pals he is disqualified for cheating.The pals attempt to help an old neighbour to train Tam the greyhound only to find themselves mixed up with the local 'mafia'. Static who wins a dividend on the Football Pools and decides to marry and the resulting altercation of the families at the wedding. Finally Mal's decision to leave his pals and home for Australia, and inevitably Oor Bit.
