Maurice Sendak (1928-2012) nació el 10 de junio de 1928 en Brooklyn, Nueva York, de padres judíos inmigrantes de Polonia. Sendak, un artista en gran medida autodidacta, ilustró más de cien libros durante sus sesenta años de carrera.

Sendak comenzó una segunda carrera como diseñador de vestuario y escenografía a finales de los años 1970, diseñando óperas que incluían Brundibar de Krása, La flauta mágica de Mozart , El amor de las tres naranjas de Prokófiev y Hansel y Gretel de Engelbert Humperdinck , así como el ballet de Chaikovski, El cascanueces . También diseñó los decorados y el vestuario, y escribió el libreto y las letras de la producción musical de Really Rosie.

Maurice Sendak sigue siendo el artista de libros infantiles más galardonado de la historia. Recibió la Medalla Caldecott en 1964, el Premio Hans Christian Andersen en 1970, el Premio Laura Ingalls Wilder en 1983 y el Premio Conmemorativo Astrid Lindgren en 2003. En 1996, el presidente Bill Clinton le otorgó la Medalla Nacional de las Artes en reconocimiento a su contribución a las artes en Estados Unidos.
