In addition to the main characters are actual people, places and events that occurred in Calfornia's frontier towns such as Columbia, Sonora, Jamestown, Chinese Camp, Coutlerville, Mariposa, Rio Vista, and of course, Snelling. The names of these citizens are slightly changed, and the historical occurrences blend naturally into the narration.
