The book that gave psychiatry the word "psychopathic" — complete in English. In 1891 Julius Ludwig August Koch, director of the state asylum at Zwiefalten, set out to describe a territory that psychiatry had until then only touched in fragments: the mental irregularities that shape a person's whole life without ever amounting to insanity. He called them psychopathische Minderwertigkeiten — psychopathic inferiorities — and the word entered the language. What Koch actually wrote is not what the word later came to mean. He insisted that his subject was not degeneracy: "The expressions degeneration and psychopathic inferiority do not coincide." He wrote that many of those he described "tower far above many normal men in qualities of the understanding, of the heart and of the character." He demanded that accountability be measured in degrees, that sentencing spare the families of the afflicted, and that no more homework be set in schools. This edition contains all three sections — 1891, 1892 and 1893 — translated entire from the Fraktur original: every chapter, every case history, every footnote. Nothing is summarised or omitted.
