the book presents the information needed to design a successful quantitative analysis using mass spectrometric techniques currently available and widely employed. it is devoted to the researchers of different areas, who use mass spectrometry as a detector suitable for the measurements of their interest. the first chapter of the book is of propadeutical value, giving a short, general description of the basic instrumental approaches (ionization methods, mass analyser, hyphenated methods, maldi/ms, and ms/ms). the second chapter is devoted to the methods able to increase the specificity of the ms-based quantitation method, i.e. those based on high-resolution mass spectrometry (hrms) and the msn collisional experiments. chapter 3 is addressed to the strategic and tactical choices to be done in order to develop an effective analytical method: the different stages (project, sampling, sample treatment, instrumental analysis, data analysis) are discussed in detail with the aid of practical examples. the capabilities and limitation of the gc/ms and lc/ms are also discussed. finally the last chapter reports some thoughts on calibration and data analysis. an appendix is devoted to basic concepts and explicit formulas of weighted regression. a pocket guide to mass spectrometry. appropriate for technicians, undergraduates and graduates working in analytical chemistry as well as researchers in both academia and industry (phara, medical, food, environment, etc). potential adoptions for industrial training courses, masters courses and workshops in analytical chemistry it was deemed to be appropriate to classify it as a text.
