Fred Uhlman (Stuttgart, 1901-Londres, 1985), de origen judío, abandonó Alemania en marzo de 1933, poco después de que Hitler fuera nombrado canciller. Residió un tiempo en París y posteriormente en España (en Tossa de Mar), de donde también escapó al estallar la guerra civil para, tras regresar unos meses a París, llegar a Londres; allí fundó el Artist’s Refugee Comittee y la Free German League of Culture, entre cuyos miembros se contaban Oskar Kokoschka y Stefan Zweig. En 1971 publicó Reencuentro, y en 1985 su «réplica», Un alma valerosa.
