Yōko Ogawa nació en Okayama, Japón, en 1962. Es una escritora japonesa reconocida por su estilo delicado y perturbador, que explora la memoria, la pérdida y las emociones humanas más profundas. Estudió Literatura en la Universidad de Waseda y desde 1988 ha publicado más de cincuenta obras de ficción y no ficción.
Su carrera literaria comenzó con "Desintegración de la mariposa" (1988), y alcanzó reconocimiento internacional con novelas como "La fórmula preferida del profesor", "La policía de la memoria", "Venganza", "La piscina", "Hotel Iris" y "La niña que iba en hipopótamo a la escuela". Su obra ha sido traducida a más de veinte idiomas y ha sido adaptada al cine y al teatro.
A lo largo de su trayectoria, ha recibido numerosos premios, incluyendo el Premio Akutagawa, el Premio Yomiuri, el Premio Tanizaki y el Premio Shirley Jackson. En 2020, "La policía de la memoria" fue finalista del Premio Booker Internacional.
